Stefano bought his property (8.5 hct in 1990), in a lush rainforest valley in the Byron Shire. It had 20 citrus trees and a few avocados which indicated that the land was productive. Stefano did the first permaculture course held in Mullumbimby in 1991 and since then he has been following these principles, combined with personal observation and experience gained during his frequent trips to Asia and Italy, where he is from.
Making money with agricultural produce is very difficult so he has been distracted by doing other business but slowly slowly he has been clearing lantana, terracing the land and each year planting more trees. Three years ago Today Stefano has more that 500 citrus trees, several trenches for ginger and turmeric and 1/2 hectare of vegetable gardens. Other projects are on the boil and he hopes with increased production he can provide Food Connect with more variety of products of quality and rarity. Their goal is to be self sufficient and supply grass roots community groups such as Food Connect with the surplus. Stefano has been supplying to Food Connect since 2013.
