Food Connect engages communities
to support agriculture enabling equitable and efficient distribution of genuine
quality fresh food between local farmers and families.
We do this by sourcing produce
that is ethically grown (beyond organics) and direct from the farmer. The
produce is packed at our Homestead
and then distributed through a convenient and flexible 'City Cousin' local
distribution system. Families are able to know their farmers and provide
feedback which in turn provides opportunities for farmers to grow better
produce with improved eco-principles.
The traditional CSA concept is one
where a community supports a local farmer. They finance the season’s planting
with an upfront subscription and are entitled to a box of produce from that
farmer each week. The subscribers share in the bounty of the harvest as well as
any shortfalls due to weather, bugs and other unfortunate (but natural)
circumstances.
Food Connect has chosen to work
with this concept and adapt it for our region. We have a number of farmers that
supply us with fresh produce which enables us to enjoy fresh food each week
while minimising any shortfalls. Our subscriptions
are sold with an upfront payment which guarantees our farmers a stable market.
Subscribers are able to enjoy other benefits such as tours of the farms from
which their produce comes from. Our unique distribution system (via our city
cousin network) further enhances the community relationship.
