Yvonne and Bruce own a 4 acre farm at Bundamba near Ipswich and on this property they have about 250 pomelo trees. 80 of these are still quite young trees that are yet to fruit. They also have a number of other fruit trees such as mango, mulberry, avocado, mandarin and grape vines although these are on a much smaller scale. The pomelo tree will fruit from May to September and will grow to 10 metres in height. The pomelos themselves can be very large, up to 10 kgs, and this may be the reason why the wood of the branches is considered a great source to make axe handles from.
Yvonne and Bruce both grew up on dairy farms and have bought this farm to keep them busy in their retirement. They use only natural fertilisers and horse manure and try to maintain everything as organic as possible. Yvonne is always keen to learn how to get a better crop and what organic methods are available to treat common pests and complaints such as mealy bug and scale.
The grapefruit was developed from the pomelo and there are some types of cholesterol medication that grapefruit can not be eaten with. So please check with your doctor if you are on this medication before eating the pomelo.
