Greg Alexander is the man behind the delicious bananas that you find inside your Food Connect boxes all year around.

Greg’s New South Wales farm at Crabbes Creek near Kyogle has been in the family for over 30 years. His mum’s family bought the farm in 1976 and at that stage it was run with 100 acres for cattle and just 40 acres of crops. Greg stepped in and took over the farm in 1990, after he finished his studies at the agricultural collage in Dalby. Since then the farm has grown to 185 acres, with 100 still dedicated to cattle, 70 acres of bananas and 15 acres of corn and sweet potatoes. Due to the size of the farm, Greg uses glyphosate to control weeds. He does not use any chemical herbicides and pesticides on the crops, just some organic fertiliser in the form of cow manure.

With such a large area dedicated to bananas Greg is able to supply Food Connect with bananas all year around – this is great news for Food Connectors! He has been supplying us since 2008. Greg or his dad Jim come in to the Homestead each week on a Friday or a Saturday to drop off their fruit for the boxes for the following week. We love their bananas as they are always really tasty – although they sometimes have a few marks on them and aren’t perfect to look at, they taste fantastic. The Alexanders also supply us with corn and sweet potatoes from their farm from time to time, so keep an eye out for them in your boxes too.

The Alexanders won’t deal through Brisbane markets as the prices are unpredictable and the quality of their produce is not appreciated. Instead they prefer to supply their produce to Food Connect and also directly to their customers at local farmers’ markets. You can visit their stall at West End, Mount Gravatt, Mudgeeraba, Cleveland or the Mogill/Beechmont markets.

What Greg and his dad Jim like about Food Connect is that we look after farmers, give the personal touch and that we are a good company to deal with.
