Here’s some information that our farmers have sent through recently that they wanted us to pass on to you, our lovely subscribers. Add a comment below about any of the fruit and veg you have been receiving in the boxes recently and we will pass all the messages on to the farmers. It really makes their day to hear what you think about their crops!
Lime report – by Paul Flower
The lime crop has reached its peak of green fruit. More fruit from now on will start to have yellow and green skin. This is the best time for limes – lots of juice and still heaps of that limey flavour. In late autumn the fully yellow fruit will be a little less limey but they make it up in sweetness and the quantity of juice. More bumpy fruit is also likely in the colder weather, but there shouldn’t be anything wrong with the fruit. Hope you enjoy the limes – its been an abundant time with the rain.
Pineapple report – by Merilyn Clark
Pineapples grow from the top of the pineapple and from planting they take two years to mature. In that time there are many elements of the weather, such as rain, frost, dry hot summers, rain in summer and humidity which can affect their growth. Sunny days can cause sunburn or can make the pines ripen too fast. Slight sunburn patches or other skin blemishes can be cut off and the rest of the pineapple still eaten. You will find that they are delicious and sweet.
Cauliflower report – by Suveda Hardwick
Cauliflowers are affected by the heat just like humans, and they also get sunburned. This is why you see a slightly pink patch on some cauliflowers – they are still perfectly good to eat!
Tammy & David Litzow
Broccoli has started and the crop’s looking good, plenty of Jap and butternut pumpkin also available. Cauliflower will start in around the 3rd week of April.
The Bauer Family
16th April – celery about 3 to 4 weeks away, butternut and Jap a couple of weeks away. Tomatoes are still in the ground – will keep you updated.

The kiwi fruit are the sweetest and most delicious I have Ever tasted! Yummmm. Thank you!
The dragon fruit were great! I hadn’t tasted them before, so really enjoyed trying something new. They were lovely and sweet. Thank you so much
I just had to drop a line and say how delicious the lemonade fruit are. I’d never eaten them before, but my mum can remember them from her childhood!
I’m really enjoying all of the fruit and veg that my partner and I are eating via Food Connect. Big thanks to the farmers and the Food Connect team
What a luxury a fresh vanilla pod in my box this week. I don’t think I’ll use it just smell it – heaven. Thank you.
The tomatoes are so full of flavour at the moment – I can’t stop eating them – they are beautiful. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Food Connect,
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
What a terrific delight to conveniently pick up a box filled with fantastic treats! We had such a fun time digging through all the fantastic fresh veggies in our box, to discover what we had! (we love lemonades!! delicious! and the kiwi fruits are fantastic..we haven’t had veggie/fruit taste this good in a very long time!!). We cooked up an amazing veggie stir fry, which tasted fantastic..no extra flavours needed- the veggies were fresh and tasted absolutely delicious!
Everything was easy to follow, our city cousin gave me awesome directions on how to pick up our box too
This is something we are defiantly continuing well into the future- its fantastic!
Thanks so much Food Connect team for making our dinners so much tastier. We can’t wait for next weeks box…
Cheers,
Meg and Hilly.
We love the produce we’ve received so far-so tasty, and crisp. As new customers we’d like to send a big thankyou to our hard working farmers who send food that is healthy for us too. I love the surprise we get each week.
It has been on my mind all week to give feedback – we have LOVED the contents of our box! In particular the tomatoes were gorgeous – just like I used to grow myself on our property before we moved here to this ‘little’ garden here at Ormiston. The avocadoes were creamy and lovely – the lettuce crunchy and fresh – and I could go on. In all, fresh and good are my overall comments.
Oh yes, and the lemonade fruit were beautiful – I chopped one through some chocolate soy ice cream. Delicious.
We are eagerly awaiting what surprises are in store tomorrow – we will have about two onions left after I have made dinner tonight!
Kind regards, Jan
Dear Food Connect:
I know I am rather late in giving you the feedback that you ask for, regarding any produce, so that you can pass it on to the farmers.
Please inform the farmer, who grows the tamarillos, that my husband and I really appreciate them.
Personally, I tried tamarillo once before at a reputable fruit market in Brisbane many years ago; but they were so tasteless I remember asking myself, “Who eats this fruit and enjoys it? Perhaps it is an acquired taste”, I thought.
However, when I tasted your farmer’s tamarillos, it was like an explosion of flavour in my mouth and I instantly desired more. Perhaps, my initial addiction to them was due to a trace nutrient lacking in my system; as I ate 5 straight up, before I was satisfied – so unlike the tasteless, water-logged ones I had years ago.
Actually, I now rate them as my third favourite fruit, only just behind guavas and boysenberries.
Kindly pass these words on to the farmer concerned.
Thank you,
Erin
Just wanted to say thankyou to the avocado growers and say how much we’ve been enjoying them. It’s hard to be patient to wait until they are ripe, but definately worth the wait – so creamy and tasty! We’ve been having avocado on toast every morning and I made up a guacomole last night because they all ripened at once this week.
I’m looking forward to making lovely, healthy fruit and vegie purees for my 6 month old daughter and trying her on solids for the first time this weekend. It’s reassuring to know I’m feeding her real food that is locally grown and fairly free from chemicals after the pure goodness of breast milk.
Thanks a lot.
Jessica
Thank you so much for the buk choy it has been delicious and the best I have ever had.
Susanne
Thanks to all the food connect farmers, I have quite a few FC friends and we all enjoy comparing what was in our boxes and talking about what we have been cooking with the produce. I have made a delicious beetroot dip and used the vanilla bean to make a honey and vanilla dressing for beetroot salad. I just read a recipe in the Brisbane news for sesame, pancetta crusted turnip bites. Will wait till I have a few more turnips for that one. My daughter polishes off all the tomatoes as dessert or an after ricebubbles treat. Muchas Gracias to the farmers and everyone that makes up food connect.
We have been diligently working our way through a box of beef from the Graham family. It was delivered to us at home on a Saturday morning, along with a free bag of bones for the dogs and a couple of bags of soup bones which made the most flavoursome beef broth I’ve ever tasted. Without fail, every single package of meat has been absolutely delicious – from the sausages through to the rib fillet and roast. Thank you to the Grahams – we have found a super-convenient way to eat quality meat without a guilty conscience.
A big thanks to all the wonderful food connect farmers who are making life very easy for me … my two year old gets so excited when we open our boxes that he just wants to try everything. His favourite thing at the moment is raw broccoli! It’s great to be able to give him such a great introduction to food.
My family & I’ve been with Food Connect for all of this year & are really enjoying it – from the absolutely delicious fruit & vege we get each week to the community feel we get from being in close contact with the farmers & from picking up our box from a local home. We’d bought organic for years, but we were becoming more & more concerned about food miles. I was a little concerned before joining Food Connect that I’d find it hard to cook from what I was given, rather than the other way around (which is how most people cook). However, I’m finding I’m more creative that I thought I’d be & am enjoying making up or finding recipes for what’s arrived in the box. Each week is a surprise & everything in the box is absolutely wonderful. Thank you to all the farmers for all your hard work in creating such amazing food. We love it!!
The turnips were delicious, I used them in a vegetable soup and they were so young and crisp that I couldn’t resist chipping and eating raw bits off as I was preparing them but most especially I liked them roasted as per the recipe, brilliant taste
Big thank you to the farmer who grows the dutch cream potatoes! Ever since I came to Australia from Germany I have been desperate to find waxy, yellow, TASTY potatoes!
Also, the cherry tomatoes were sensational!
As are the peanuts, which we tried for the first time.
Last – please bring back the golden kiwis! Was it such a short season? We NEED them!
I just wanted to say a big thank you to the farmers who supply the vegetables I get every week. I love opening up the box, and seeing what’s been put in for the week.
I grew up on a farm and know how much hard work goes into growing food. The vegetables I have gotten have been fantastic every time and full of flavour. Everyone should be using Food Connect!
Just wanted to let you know that the apples were DELICIOUS this past week! Please pass on our thanks to the farmer for providing them (Dennis Angelino?) Best apples we have tasted in a long time
To the many wonderful farmers of QLD… For the past several weeks, before I begin to eat a delicious meal prepared with produce beautifully provided by you, I say a silent ” thank you ” to you. All of the hard work and sacrifices you make are appreciated EVERY DAY. I cannot think of a more important or worthy job than farming. Tank you for all you do… and for doing it so well. Sincerely, Benji
A few weeks ago we had 2 phenominal passionfruit in our gourmet box. The colour of the juice was an incredible intense orange and the flavour eclipsed anything I’ve ever tasted. Thank-you. I know how hard it is to grow them locally with all the viruses that they are prone to here in Brisbane. Well done to produce such remarkable fruit. They were first prize fruit.
Hello everyone!! I’ve been with Food Connect for a few months and I’m a very happy customer. It’s like Christmas every Wednesday afternoon when I open my box. I’m so impressed with the quality and variety and I love that I’m eating local seasonal food and that our farmers are appreciated and paid fairly. My new favourite fruit is the lemonade fruit so I’ll patiently look forward to receiving them again. I also love the broccoli, oranges (the juiciest and tastiest I’ve ever eaten), apples (so crispy), sprouts (the sunflower sprouts this week have been a fabulous surprise), turmeric (now I’ve gone fresh I’ll never go back), bananas, beetroot …. it’s all so good. Thank you very much to the farmers, distributors and city cousins and I hope I can share some useful recipes soon.
Peace.
